Curlew is the largest of five cottages at How Hill. Originally a threshing barn and horse engine room, the cottage is bursting with character and boasts many original features. After a hearty Yorkshire breakfast, make the most of the cottage’s location and head out into Fountains Abbey’s deer park, just a mile from the holiday home.

Place NSW. This artisan’s cottage was built in 1871, when a humble cobbler could live a stone’s throw from Sydney Harbour and think nothing of it. Virtually untouched, it gives a glimpse into life as Australia the colony became Australia the nation. Built in 1871, it was the home of John and Ann Hillman and their five children.

The house is furnished to reflect the home of Surgeon Harris, with simple but elegant pieces from National Trust’s collection of early colonial furniture, the largest of its kind in Australia. In the year 2000, the National Trust landscaped and planted the immediate grounds, using evidence from early paintings, plant catalogues and photographs to recreate, as far as possible, an authentic setting for the cottage.
