One of the locations mentioned in the article was the Crystal Cove Historic District’s Cottage #13, which had been featured in the 1988 film Beaches. I was absolutely floored to learn of the locale as I had previously been under the impression that the Beaches cottage was located on the East Coast, near Coney Island where the flick’s opening scenes were lensed.

Look out for the row of brightly painted beach huts – it was filmed at The Walings. They were once a set of low-key hideaways though now they’re very much in demand, changing hands with a serious price tag. Other scenes were shot at Shingle Street, a tiny hamlet on the Suffolk coast. It’s not hard to find the exact where filming took place, just in front of the only row of cottages.

In the 1983 ABC television miniseries Thorn Birds, there is an iconic scene filmed at Ke’e Beach where the lovers consummate their passion. In the background there is a cottage that is clearly visible overlooking Ke’e Beach. Believe it or not, that cottage is still there, relatively close to the shore but hidden by heavy vegetation.

The cottage’s porch area was used extensively during the filming. The interior of Hillary’s beach house was just a set, though. As you can see below, the real life interior of Cottage #13 is much, much smaller than what appeared onscreen. Although it does appear that one of the cottage’s actual rooms was used in the filming. The Beaches cottage, which is currently under renovation and will eventually serve as Crystal Cove’s film museum (how cool is that???), has a plaque on display ...

For the pilot episode, they filmed inside a real house in Wilmington, NC, and the Grayson Manor set was later based on it: When they were shooting outdoor scenes by the pool, they used a house in Malibu on Winding Way: Back to Emily’s Beach House. The porch scene between Ellie and Jack was filmed at the house (and the real-life resident was lucky enough to watch it unfold).
