In a medium saucepan, cook ground beef and onion over medium-high heat until beef is very well browned, about 10-15 minutes. Stir in the sliced mushrooms and package of frozen peas & carrots. Fry the mince in a little oil with the stock cubes till browned. Add in the swede, carrot, onion, garlic, bay, thyme and rosemary and fry for about 5 minutes. Add the port and leave uncovered, simmering until port has completely evaporated. At this stage add the beef stock to cover, and simmer for 1/2 hour, covered.

Cottage pie is made with beef and Shepherds pie is made with lamb. As a Brit living in the USA, I would know this. Besides, there would be no reason to call it two different things if the ingredients were the same.

Fry chopped onion, carrot and celery for 10 mins until sift then add cooked lamb, a teaspoon of tomato puree a dash of worcester, a bay leaf and 100ml of veg or chickken stock. Simmer for 10 mins.
