Jesús Herrera, the lone surviving member of the Herrera clan, was Villa’s sworn enemy and attempted several times to assassinate him from 1919 – 1923.

The only condition of his surrender was that he not enter politics again. Villa surrendered in 1916 and remained at home, dealing with personal issues and taking care of his ranch. He was shot in 1923 when he went into town for ranch business.

Villa was buried in the city cemetery located in Parral, Chihuahua after he died at the rather young age of 45 years old. There are tombs for him both there and in Mexico City. Three years later, in 1926, his skull was stolen from his grave. Unfortunately, those who opposed him could not even let him rest in peace.

Carranza’s government and military were also notoriously corrupt, and relations with the US would remain strained until 1924 or 1925. Pancho Villa was assassinated in Parral, Mexico in 1923, most likely at the orders of his main political rival, Obregon, although that’s never been proved.

Pancho Villa was assassinated on July 20, 1923. Villa was in his Dodge Sedan with his bodyguards, driving home from Parral to Canutillo. A street vendor was waving to him at the intersection Benito Juarez / Gabino Barveda. Pancho slowed his car to return the greeting and the vendor shouted "¡Viva Villa!".

Pancho Villa, who was lucky enough to survive numerous bloody battles and was nearly killed on several occasions, ran out of luck on July 20, 1923, when he was assassinated whilst driving in Parral, Chihuahua, in his black 1919 Dodge touring car, accompanied by his bodyguards.

On March 9, 1916, Villa attacked the town of Columbus, New Mexico. His was the first foreign attack on American soil since 1812. The United States sent several thousand soldiers across the border to hunt for Villa. Though they spent over a year searching, they never caught him.

Villa again was defeated by Carranza on 1 November 1915 at the Second Battle of Agua Prieta, after which Villa's army collapsed as a significant military force. Villa subsequently led a raid against a small U.S.-Mexican border town resulting in the Battle of Columbus on 9 March 1916, and retreated to escape U.S. retaliation.
