The touch-me-not cottage is the house that the Foster family lives in. It is called the touch-me-not cottage because everything appears so incredibly neat and ordered that to touch anything might mess up the perfection. That's the main reason why people actively avoid the Foster cottage.

The fact that the Fosters' house is called a "touch me not cottage" indicates that the cottage is pristine but not inviting.

It is the people who live in this house, the Fosters, who own the woods nearby. Since no road goes through the woods, very few people go into the woods at all. Even the ten-year-old daughter of the Foster family, Winnie, isn't particularly interested in it. This is fortunate, because there is a secret in the woods.

In 1950, nearly seventy years later, Mae and Tuck return to Treegap in a horse and buggy, looking very out of place. They are shocked to see that the woods and the Foster cottage are gone, and that there are many new streets and houses and stores. Some people joke about how old-fashioned they look as they pass by, but Mae and Tuck ignore them.

On the outside of this hub, connected by the wood, are the Tuck family, ten-year-old Winnie Foster, and the man in the yellow suit. The wood is a strange place and it makes people want to avoid it. The narrator insists that this is wise, as if a person were to go into the wood, they'd discover a huge ash tree and a spring coming from its roots.

There were many changes when the Tuck's visited Tree Gap again including: paved roads, gas stations, convenience stores, and hotels. However, the wood that held the secret fountain remained the same.
