Bamboo, cork, and engineered hardwood are all resilient, good-looking, and economical flooring choices for a non-winterized cottage, but, certainly, laminate can work.

A reader asked recently whether it is normal for vinyl flooring to lift after a few years inside a cottage that is not heated in winter. In my experience, the answer is no. We had vinyl flooring in...

That is why an unheated cottage floor needs to be beautiful, low maintenance and durable. Hardwood is very beautiful but can crack with changes in temperature and humidity. With people coming in and out all day long, the grit and sand tracked in can scratch hardwood floors. Carpet is very warm and comfortable but needs to be vacuumed regularly.

Hard surface flooring is by far the best choice for a vacation home. Whether its hardwood, cork, laminate or luxury vinyl tile, any one of these materials will meet the demands of vacation living. 2. Elevate With Hardwood. If you want your cottage décor to reflect the natural beauty of the outdoors, then hardwood is a great choice.

I would stay away from laminates or engineered hardwoods for the simple fact is they expand and contract and with the dramatic temperature fluctuations of the seasons, they will start to deteriorate within a few years(if even that long). We definitely do not recommend a solid hardwood.

If your set on the wood floors you could do it, but you’ll have to put down a vapor barrier (like you’d put under click wood type floors). It’s basically the same process, just a lot harder because of drilling into the concrete to get the screws to hold.

The place used to have linoleum in the bedrooms which was removed to show the original wood floors. There was no problems with the linoleum in the heat and cold either, it was just ugly. We have no insulation under the floor (perhaps we will spray some in this fall) the cottage is up on piers with the underside open to the out of doors.

If anything, mixing up pieces and materials is the hallmark of the cottage look. For example, have a large hutch along with built in cabinets rather than all cabinets. For flooring, I prefer wood because it's softer on the feet. I love the look of flagstones or brick floors but they are hard.

Well, the answer is YES, you can put hardwood flooring in your cottage, but you need to find the right product for your individual space. Okay, you are probably sitting there thinking what do you mean

We also are in the process of choosing a floor for a large log home which is not heated in winter. The inside temps will probably get down to as low as 15. We now have in various areas, carpet; pine wood floor; armstrong tile floors glued down; self-stick floor tiles and linoleum.

Flooring in unheated cabin Hi, We ended up using a floating laminate made by Dupont with the underpad attached the laminate. The snapstone tiles sound interesting. If we ever upgrade the current floor we will keep that option in mind. This will be the floors first winter so we will see how it fares.

I found lots of great options of wide plank engineered hardwood, but I fell in love with this Vanier European Oak Whitewash Collection flooring. It comes in 7 1/2 inch wide planks, and it has a brushed finish, which is so cottagey and worn feeling without being too rustic.

Floating floors, such as laminate or newer luxury vinyl planks, have locking systems where all of the planks are connected to each other and the unit simply “floats” over your subfloor without the use of adhesives or fasteners. These planks will also expand and contract, but they will do so as one whole unit because they are locked together. Floating floors tend to be more economical than hardwoods, and they are a snap to install – pun intended.

The materials used to make engineered hardwood are moisture-resistant, and the layers are pressed together with their grains alternating directions, which results in less expansion, contraction, and warping than natural hardwood. Engineered hardwood is more stable than solid wood and is ideal in environments where the humidity exceeds 50 percent.
